Photographic images are most often displayed in 24-bit True Color, in a format such as JPEG, rather than the limited palette of an indexed color image, such as a GIF. Photographic images contain subtle gradations that are not easily reproduced in fewer colors, and yet are dithered quite serviceably by the browser if the client machine is running in a 256-color video mode. What s more, the JPEG format excels at compressing the smooth tones of photographic images down to unbelievably small file sizes, without an appreciable loss of quality. The fact that the JPEG format is so good at the things the GIF format fails miserably at is part of the reason for their enduring, successful partnership as the king and queen of Web graphics formats.

The quickest way to invoke Spotlight and get it looking for your information is to press +spacebar to open the Spotlight menu at the right end of the menu bar. Then type your search terms. Before you re even done typing, Spotlight starts throwing up results right there in the menu. If you find what you want, your search is over; just choose the item from the menu to open it. Or choose Show All, at the top of the menu, to display the search results in a Spotlight window (which is really just a Finder window) where you can sort them or modify your search further (see figure 1.19). If you know you ll need to narrow your search after it s begun, you can skip the Spotlight menu and start out in a Spotlight window by pressing +Option+spacebar. As I mentioned, this method of searching combs through every scrap of information on your iMac looking for the specified search terms. Sometimes, though, that s overkill. If you re pretty sure that the information you re seeking resides in a standard document, such as a text file or a spreadsheet, you can use the search field in the Finder s toolbar instead; this restricts the search to individual documents and leaves out larger databases such as your Address Book and iCal information.
